The two day fund raising event was a smashing success! We met or exceeded most of our goals and a grand time was had by all who attended. Participation in the fishing derby event included twenty three four man teams paired with a professional fishing guide, where each team tried to accumulate the most fish points over the two day event period. Participation in the fund raiser event included teams from Eureka, Fortuna, Arcata, Sacramento, Granite Bay, Brookings, San Jose, San Francisco, Cloverdale, Vallejo, San Rafael, San Anselmo, and Laguna Beach, to name a few. Although competition was fierce for the various awards the event was offering, all participants left with a feeling of complete satisfaction knowing their attendance and participation had greatly contributed towards benefiting the local Klamath fishery and its community.

As stated by one participant “Even though my team didn’t place in the money we all leave here winners knowing we helped this important cause become a success story”. Although it’s too early to state exact numbers, derby officials believe that the event has raised nearly fifteen thousand dollars of distributable funds. These funds will now be passed on to the two projects (www.affinc.org/projects) which needed financial aid and support.

The other valuable component of the event, that which is immeasurable but real, is that the local economy and businesses have also benefited tremendously from the event. The event through its advertising, promotions, and post event write-ups has reached tens of thousands of people and advised them of the unique fishing opportunities which are available here on the Klamath River. Rosalie Snow (President – AFF) stated “If we can only get people to come here once they will be certainly hooked for life – this very special place - its natural beauty and fishery sells itself”.
This statement rang true among all event participants which were first comers to the Klamath, one contestant from San Jose stated “For years I have been going to Alaska to satisfy my urge to fish, from now on I will be coming to the Klamath”.
Based on the overwhelming success of this years event the Board Members of the American Fishing Foundation have unanimously voted to make this an annual event. The Board is taking immediate and necessary steps to plan next years Klamath Fishing Derby. Additionally, it is our anticipation that next years event will be bigger and better. “Preserving, protecting, and enhancing our local natural and physical resources is a vital and necessary component to a healthful and rich community.” (Rosalie Snow, President of AFF)
Proceeds from this event are presently being distributed to Roy Rook Boat Dock Facility and the Yearling Chinoook Program at the Irongate Hatchery.
